The Bengaluru Cooperative Milk Union Ltd., (Bamul) a unit of Karnataka Milk Federation was established during 1975 under Operation Flood II the ambitious programme of National Dairy Development Board. The Union procures milk in Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural & Ramanagara Districts of Karnataka State and sells Milk in Bengaluru.The union since its inception is constantly striving further for dairy development and marketing activities in its milk shed area.
The objective of the unions is to eliminate middlemen and organize institutions owned and managed by milk producers, achieve economies of scale for rural milk producers by ensuring maximum returns and at the same time providing wholesome and quality milk and milk products to consumers at reasonable price.
The milk shed area of Bamul comprises of 4,167 revenue villages. As of now the Union has organized 2,160 Milk Producers Co-operative Society (MPCS) in 3217 villages in these three districts. In these MPCS’s, there are 3,49168 registered milk producer members. Among them 1,24,568 members are women and 56219 members belong to Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes.
The milk and milk products are sold in the name of brand “NANDINI” through 1954 retailers, 81 Franchisee Outlets, 49 Milk Parlors, 330 distribution routes in Bengaluru. The key success factor of Bamul in becoming a market leader is the narrow price spread maintained between purchase & sales, marketing higher volumes of milk. There are more than 60 products which include many variants of Milk and Milk Products, Curd, Butter, Cheese, Milk powder, Paneer, Sweets, Biscuits and many more which are well accepted and appreciated by the consumers.
Bangalore Dairy is FSSC certified dairy for quality management and food safety systems and the dairy has also been awarded the “Quality Mark” for the quality of its milk and milk products. In recognition to these achievements, the National Productivity Council (NPC) of Government of India has conferred “Best Productivity Award” Five Times and “Energy Conservation Award” by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and has received “Management Excellence Award” for the year 2016-17.
Recently Bamul has commissioned a Mega Milk Product Plant near Bengaluru with an investment of Rs.600 crore to manufacture different types of Cheese,Whey powder, SMP, WMP, Yogurts and other value added products. In order to expand the reach of its products at Pan India and in International Markets. Bamul has undertaken ambitious plan to enter into sales, distribution and marketing of its products under NANDINI brand.
