Just like any other day, I was browsing the internet and looking for some good movies to watch to kill time. But little did I know I was in for a shock. Because as soon as I started looking for some good comedy flicks on ZEE5, I stumbled upon the trailer of Dhilluku Dhuddu 2, and I can’t believe that the movie has already released on ZEE5. Generally, when a movie manages to carve a special place in the audience’s heart, a sequel of the original movie is made to satisfy the hunger of the fans. But, more often than not, the sequels do not do as good as the prequel in the theatre, which is why we do not have many movie series in Kollywood. But there are some exceptions to this as well, and a fine example of this would be Dhilluku Dhuddu 2. In fact, as much as I loved the first part, I think the second was better in many aspects. If you do not believe me, then you have to go check out Dhilluku Dhuddu 2 right now.
The first part, Dhilluku Dhuddu was released in 2016, 2 years after Santhanam chose to play the lead in the movies. His decision to play the lead did manage to raise some eyebrows, but long-time followers of Santhanam, like me, were much excited to see him go solo. I mean, Dhilluku Dhuddu was one of my all-time favourites, because it had everything that I would expect from a movie that can help me lose all the stress that I have accumulated over the week. Dhilluku Dhuddu was a cumulative spoof of the horror movie cliches. The very concept of a man bullying ghost makes up for a hilarious ride. I, personally, have watched the movie many times and that is why with this article I’m trying to decode the success of the Dhilluku Dhuddu series. So, the following are points that I think made the horror comedy movie series a hit among the audience.
Santhanam’s unique screen presence: Macha! Correct me if I am wrong, but Santhanam is that friend that everyone one of us deserves to have. He would go to any extent to unite, or in some case reunite, you with your love, even if it is his own sister (read: Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru reference). Maybe that is why we loved it when the actor of Lollu Sabha fame rose from comedian to a hero. His screen presence in Dhilluku Dhuddu reminded me of the classic movies of Goundamani. Over the years, the actor has changed his persona as a dominating one, making us believe that he can even go toe to toe with anyone, be it a human or a ghost. The actor is very passionate about acting, and it is very evident from the movies he chooses.
Return of the Lollu Sabha combo: Can any combo get better than this? Growing up Lollu Sabha was my go-to stress buster, and I was one of those guys who were left devastated when the show was dropped from the channel. And that is why I was so pleased to hear that the actor would be collaborating with the Lollu Sabha team again with this series. This includes the director of Lollu Sabha team Rambhala who has already won the hearts of millions with his style of comedy in Lollu Sabha. Also, a closer observation would reveal that Dhilluku Dhuddu is no different than Lollu Sabha. They both offer a laughter ride by picking on movie cliches.
Approach to horror and comedy: Horror and Comedy are two genres that are totally contrasting to each other, yet when combined can make up for a great watch. Movies like Muni series, Darling and the Dhilluku Dhuddu has managed to get it right. But that there is one thing that separates Dhilluku Dhuddu from the rest. It is the fact that rather than getting scared, the protagonist actually scares the ghost by making fun of its appearance and the age-old horror cliches. Believe me, you will literally roll on the floor after watching it.
This is how I think Dhilluku Dhuddu cracked the code to success. What is your take on it? Put it in the comment section below. See ya on the next one.
